Lyrel Teagarden papers, 1921-1951.

Collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, day journals, newsclippings, newsletters, and photographs relating to American missionary Lyrel Teagarden and her work as a missionary in China, first in Nanjing Province, where there were few foreigners at the time, and then in Shanghai, from 1921 to 1951. Correspondence includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, 1921-1951, in which Teagarden discusses her work as a teacher and a missionary, local social and economic conditions, and major political events in China. Teagarden's literary manuscripts include a religious curriculum booklet and a work of fiction based on her experiences that takes place during the Nationalist Revolution of 1927 and the Japanese Invasion of 1937. Photographs include images of a blind girl's school in China, taken in 1938, and travel photographs taken in Japan, 1927-1928.

As a member of the Disciples of Christ Church, American Lyrel Teagarden worked as a missionary in China, 1920 to 1951, in Jamaica, 1952-1956, and in Washington State at the Yakima Indian Mission during World War II. Teagarden published short stories, articles, and poems in Christian publications and produced six volumes in Chinese for teachers of religious education in China.
